You can import or open an existing LDD file in Studio. Importing a file will add it as a submodel in the current project. Opening a file will make it a new project. Studio can read and write LEGO Digital Designer (LDD) files in .lxf or .lxfml formats.
Opening an LDD file
To open an LDD file in a new project, click on File | Open, use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl O or:
- From the Welcome screen, click Open (B),
- Browse and select a file on your computer.
Importing an LDD file
To import an LDD file as a submodel in the current model:
- From the Welcome screen, click Open (B). Select a file to import from the file browser.
- Use the menu entry File | Import… | Import Model… to browse and select a file on your computer.
Problem parts
Problems can happen when converting an LDD file to Studio's format.
- Missing decoration: Studio knows how to convert a few decorated parts, but it generally can't recognize them and will swap in plain, undecorated parts instead.
- Incorrect position or orientation: Parts may appear with incorrect positioning. If this happens, please let us know on the Studio Forum or send an email to bricklink@support.lego.com.
- Unknown part with a 3D model: For some parts, Studio has 3D models but doesn’t have mapping info for their LDD parts. These parts appear correctly in the build, but have no connectivity information and their names end with .dat in the Status bar.
- Completely unknown part: Some parts are completely unknown to Studio, especially custom parts. These parts will be replaced by a special representative part - a cube with a red question mark (?) on top.
